The most dangerous job in the U.S. is construction laborer, while the safest is accountant/auditor, according to a study released Thursday by Carlsbad, CA based CareerCast.
Construction laborers toil in high-risk construction sites and, as a result, have the highest on-the-job injury and fatality rate, the study said, citing data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
By contrast, accountants face a “low rate of physical incident,” CareerCast reported.
Besides the BLS, CareerCast used data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and various trade organization data. Most of the 10 most dangerous jobs in 2016 involve healthcare, transportation, civil service agriculture and construction.
Other dangerous occupations include corrections office, emergency medical technician, farmer, firefighter, nursing assistant, police officer, taxi driver, truck driver and veterinarian.
“Animals can be unpredictable and sometimes dangerous,” said Kyle Kensing, online content editor, CareerCast. “Veterinarians working with dogs and cats can face the workplace hazards of bites and scratches, and those who work with livestock and other large animals risk serious injury.”
Others among the safest jobs were actuary, computer systems analyst, dietician, interpreter or translator, mathematician, medical records technician, paralegal assistant, statistician and web developer.
CareerCast said the safest jobs were chosen based on work environment, luding exertion and stamina, physical demands, work conditions like exposure to toxic fumes or noise, and degree of confinement.
