A crawler crane is mounted on crawler tracks and is able to move around a job site at slow speeds and carry loads.  Typically, crawler cranes are on long term crane rental projects because of their heavy weight and size.  These cranes are employed at bridge, steel erection, plant maintenance,  port, demolition, mining, and general construction sites worldwide.

Other applications for crawler cranes include Duty Cycle (Pile Driving and Loading/Unloading Aggregate), Magnet, Dragline, and Clamshell work.  Draglines are designed to excavate material below the level of the crane. 

Due to the immense size and weight of most crawler cranes, transport from site to site is labor intensive and requires multiple loads especially for the larger capacity crawler cranes. 

Capacities range from 40 to 3, 500 tons and popular manufacturers of lattice boom crawler cranes are American (now Terex), Demag, Hitachi-Sumitomo, Kobelco, Liebherr, Link-Belt, Manitowoc, Sany, Sennebogen, and Zoomlion.

Telescopic Crawlers which are gaining in popularity are manufactured by Grove, Liebherr, Link-Belt, and Mantis (Tadano). Typically crawler cranes have lattice boom sections with jib sections and some have luffing boom sections.  Attachments such as MAX-ER by Manitowoc and Ringers can increase the capacity of the powerful lift cranes.
