Gottwald originally based in Dusseldorf, Germany,  was a pioneer in manufacturing and developing crane product lines. Many innovations found in current lattice boom cranes, crawler cranes, telescopic truck cranes, all terrains, port & harbour cranes can be traced back to the decades-long contributions that Gottwald made to the modern-day crane industry.

Demag, Terex, Krupp, Grove (Manitowoc Group), Konecranes (Port Solutions), and Tadano cranes can be traced back to Gottwald Cranes.

In 1987, Krupp Mobilkrane GmbH bought out the Gottwald Kranetechnologie hydraulic division range of mobile cranes up to 1, 000 tons (metric), and the Gottwald AMK Series became the KMK Series of All Terrain Cranes.

In 1995, Grove Worldwide bought the KMK All-Terrain mobile line (now the GMK Series) and in 2002, Grove Worldwide became part of the Manitowoc Group.

The Gottwald AMK product line of mobile cranes (up to 1987) is supported by Manitowoc Group Authorized Grove Crane distributors, and aftermarket part suppliers.

Also in 1987,  Demag bought the lattice division of crawler cranes from Gottwald.  In 2002, Terex acquired the Demag product line of Crawlers Cranes and mobile cranes. In 2019, Tadano purchased Terex Corporation’s Demag mobile cranes business.

Gottwald Crawler Crane's (pre-1987) product line is now supported by Tadano and after-market part suppliers.

Terex Corp acquired the Demag subsidiary, Gottwald Port Technology, and formed Terex Material Handling & Port Solutions along with the port line of PPM Reach Stackers and Noell / Fantuzzi gantry cranes and Reach Stackers.

The Gottwald port product line included ship-to-shore and mobile harbor cranes, straddle and sprinter carriers, automated guided vehicles and stacking cranes, rubber-tired and rail-mounted gantry cranes, reach stackers, empty and full container handlers, as well as cargo lift trucks.

In 2017, Finnish manufacturer Konecranes announced the acquisition of Terex Material Handling & Port Solutions (MHPS), and subsequently, all previous product lines from the Terex-Gottwald port segment are now branded as Konecranes. Parts and support for previous Terex / Gottwald Port Solutions product lines are provided by Konecranes.

Pre 1987 Gottwald-manufactured cranes are still working worldwide as well as Terex-Gottwald Port cranes up to 2017 and can be found for sale on the used crane marketplace.
