The construction boom fall out from 2008 is still being felt by residents of Puerto del Rosario in the eastern part of the island of Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands.

For 9 years a tower crane sits abandoned by the construction contractor who went bankrupt during the 2008 financial melt down.  The tower crane was in good operating condition at the time of the financial collapse but after nine years of neglect the elements have taken a toll on the crane.

The main concern now is the safety for the residents of the community.  The abandoned building poses issues along with the structural integrity of the tower crane.  Mariola Ceballos, president of the neighborhood association of El Charco Los Hornos, said “Today the crane is totally abandoned, we have consulted the current regulations which stipulate that, in these cases, the City Council has a responsibility for that crane. Children play in the area, the main concern is if the crane topples and kills children in the area”
