The 140-ton (130 metric ton) lifting capacity Terex Explorer 5500 All Terrain Crane was first released in 2014. This model complemented the larger Terex Explorer 5600 and Terex Explorer 5800.

While no longer in production, this crane was part of the Terex Explorer five-axle series of All Terrain Cranes based on Demag designs that featured a single-engine concept. 

The Tadano Group acquired the Demag All Terrain line from Terex and continues supporting this model crane through an extensive global network of Authorized Tadano distributors. 

Features a 60-meter (196') main boom; three extensions of 11 (36'), 21 (68'), and 33 (108') meters in length are available, all of which can be offset. The maximum system tip height length is 86.5 meters (283').

A very compact crane, that is ideal for use inside cities as well as on narrow construction sites. In addition, steerable axles provide great maneuverability in tight quarters. For comfort and safety in driving operation, the Explorer 5500 AT has a dynamic launch control function that prevents the crane from rolling backward when starting up and maneuvering on uphill grades.

With various configuration options, the Explorer 5500 crane can be adapted to fulfill the road service approval regulations of key markets for this capacity class. This is possible with variable axle loads and axle pair intervals, the dismountable main boom, transport dolly preparation, and a maximum front overhang of over only 5' (1.52 meters). 

A Focus on Economic Viability

Components of the Terex Explorer 5500 can be transported using a single standard support vehicle resulting in low operating costs – the automatic counterweight setup system,  allows the crane to be readied for operation quickly. The electronically controlled brake system makes for lower wear and thus reduced operating costs while at the same time increasing brake power. 

With the Innovative Terex Single-Motor Concept

The Explorer 5500 crane features the single-motor concept/ The control system automatically recognizes each demand and switches from high power in driving operation to energy-saving mode during crane operation.

Moreover, the system also has an energy-saving start/stop function. The powerful and economical Scania engine meets emission standards for Euromot 4 and Tier 4 (final).

An optional Euromot 3a / Tier 3 was made available for applicable markets.

The Explorer 5500 all-terrain crane is equipped with ergonomically designed and spacious cabs for comfortable operation: The carrier cab lacks a B-column to provide optimum visibility, and the superstructure cab offers ample legroom. The crane operator's cabin is tiltable up to 16° to ensure comfortable work for extended periods. Both cabs are equipped with ergonomic seats and have ventilation nozzles that can be adjusted individually.

For operational safety, monitoring displays on a touch screen with intuitive controls provide the driver with important data on more than ten operational parameters of the carrier, such as tire pressure, brake system status, and the suspension system. In addition, there is constant monitoring for maintaining the axle loads.

In the superstructure, the time-tested, likewise intuitively operated Terex/Demag IC-1 control system is used, in which all load charts, the respective working range limits, and more are saved to offer rapid, simple, and safe configuration.
