The Model 999 is engineered to handle heavy loads with a design that balances power and reach. 

• Boom and Jib Options: Equipped with a 290 ft (88.4 m) heavy-lift boom. It can reach up to (330 ft) 100.6 m with a fixed jib or 420 ft (128 m) with a luffing jib.
• Power Plant: Powered by a  400 HP (298 kW) Cummins diesel engine (typically Model QSM11).
• Specialized Duty: Capable of clamshell work with a 29,500 lb (13,381 kg) capacity and dragline work with a  20,000 lb (9,000 kg) capacity.

Control and Operational Systems

The series is distinguished by its use of advanced control technology for precise load handling. 

• EPIC Control System: Includes Manitowoc’s Electronically Processed Independent Control (EPIC) system. According to Maxim Crane Works, this microprocessor-driven system provides smooth operation, on-board diagnostics, and service information.
• Independent Hydraulics: Features closed-loop hydraulics with CANBUS technology, enabling truly independent variable-speed operation of the swing, load hoist, and boom hoist.
• Safety Features: Standard equipment includes an Integrated Rated Capacity Limiter (RCL).

The 999 is optimized for fast deployment and efficient transport between job sites. 

• Fast Self-Assembly: Designed for efficient self-assembly and disassembly to minimize setup time. It includes features such as FACT connectors to speed up boom-section assembly.
• Efficient Shipping: A complete crane with its maximum boom, fixed jib, and counterweights can be shipped on only 12 trucks.
• Series Configurations: The crane is available in Series 1, 2, and 3 configurations, which differ primarily by counterweight packages and lifting capacities.
