Preparations are underway to lift a toppled tower at Imperial Oil, using a lattice boom tower crane and an All Terrain Crane  to hold up the structure, an Imperial Oil spokesperson says.

The move is to double up on safety, said Kristina Zimmer.

“They should be doing the lift in a few days,” she said.

A lattice boom crawler crane has already been erected, alongside where the 45-meter structure fell in the Sarnia plant’s refinery section on April 2. Another larger crane  – with a massive 72-meter boom – had yet to arrive Tuesday afternoon, Zimmer said.

The tower – empty when it slammed down in the evening two weeks ago – is resting securely on another now-damaged structure, Zimmer said.

The tower fell to the west, away from Vidal Street South, where the main road through Sarnia’s Chemical Valley intersects with Imperial Avenue. Imperial reported no injuries.

According to the Observer, Plans are to lift it to add an extra layer of safety for personnel on site, she said, as they figure out the cleanup process.

Imperial continues to work with the investigating regulatory authorities and will be reviewing its response to the incident with CVECO, Zimmer said in a news release.
